What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are a type of cosmetic treatment used to enhance the appearance of the skin by adding volume to areas that have lost collagen and elastin, such as the cheeks, lips, and under the eyes. They are also commonly used to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. The most common type of dermal filler is made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is already present in the skin. There are many different types of dermal fillers available, each with their own unique properties and advantages. For example, some fillers are designed to add volume to the cheeks, while others are used to plump up the lips. Some fillers are also formulated to be more resistant to breaking down, which means they can last longer. The procedure for administering dermal fillers is typically quick and simple. The filler is injected into the skin using a fine needle or cannula. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Depending on the type of filler used, the results can last anywhere from six months to two years. Dermal fillers are considered safe and effective when performed by an experienced injector. The most common side effects are mild swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection site. These side effects typically resolve within a few days. Dermal fillers are a non-surgical alternative to other cosmetic procedures like facelift and eyelift. However, they are not permanent and need to be repeated to maintain the results. It is important to choose an experienced and qualified injector to ensure the best results.
HOW IT WORKS
Dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that naturally occurs in the body to replenish facial volume. Hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1000x its weight in water – allowing it to restore and boost facial contours, lift cheeks, add subtle or dramatic volume to lips and even perfect areas including the jaw and chin – all in as little as a lunch hour.
There are different types of dermal filler that are best suited to different areas of the face, and different patients. During your personal and confidential consultation, Dr. Dempsey will advise you on the best facial fillers for your needs.
COMMON QUESTIONS
DERMAL FILLERS
Do the injections hurt?
Pain is very individualized and dependent on one’s tolerance to pain. Some dermal fillers also contain a temporary freezing ingredient (similar to “dental freezing”) such that most patients report that the discomfort is very minimal.
How many units of BOTOX Cosmetic will I need?
Different fillers are designed to achieve different outcomes. At your initial consultation with Dr. Dempsey, she will discuss a personalized treatment plan that’s tailored to you. It could be that you need one or more of these options:
- Smooth fine lines on your forehead and the lower face
- Soften moderate lines in your mouth to chin area and from your nose to lip corners
- Remodel your cheeks and chin, and give more definition
- Minimize scars
- Define or enhance lips, subtly and naturally
- Restore lost facial volume.
Can fillers be reverse or removed?
Absolutely! Hyaluronic acid fillers can be quickly dissolved using an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. This acts to disperse hyaluronic acid, speeding up the natural breakdown of the dermal filler.
